Preserving the Beauty of Hand-Engraved Jewelry

At Esperer, every piece of jewelry is hand-engraved with care, passion, and precision — made to last a lifetime and beyond. Unlike machine engraving, our hand engraving is deeper and more expressive, especially on areas more prone to wear, such as the bottom of rings. While normal wear is expected over time, how you care for your piece will greatly influence how well the engraving endures.

Because each creation is one-of-a-kind, we encourage treating it with the same intention with which it was made. Here are a few ways to care for your custom engraved jewelry:

Care Tips for Hand-Engraved Rings & Jewelry

  1. Avoid Wearing During Strenuous Activities
Refrain from wearing rings while lifting weights, doing manual labor, gardening, or any activity that might cause dents or scratches — especially on the engraved portions.

  2. Routine Cleaning Helps Maintain Detail
Use a gentle ultrasonic cleaner or warm soapy water and a soft brush to clean debris that may settle into the engraving. This keeps the lines crisp and visible.

  3. Professional Cleanings
Jewelers often offer ultrasonic cleanings. However, always inform them that your piece is hand engraved. Avoid polishing if they are unfamiliar with how to work with engraved surfaces, as aggressive polishing can blur or flatten intricate details.

  4. Polish Blank Areas, Not the Engraving
The contrast between shiny blank surfaces and textured engravings is what makes your piece visually stunning. Use a polishing cloth on the non-engraved areas to keep the piece glowing while allowing the engraved patterns to remain sharp.

  5. Inspect Prongs Regularly
For rings with stones, check prongs to ensure they are intact. Avoid rubbing, bending, or filing them down. Weak prongs can lead to stone loss.

  6. Avoid Harsh Chemicals
Keep your jewelry away from household cleaners, bleach, and other corrosive agents that can tarnish or damage the metal and engraving.

  7. Store Properly
Store your piece in a soft pouch or lined box to protect it from scratches when not being worn. Avoid storing multiple pieces together, especially if they are engraved.

  8. Avoid Prolonged Exposure to Water
Occasional water exposure is fine, but remove rings before swimming or showering to reduce metal fatigue and potential fading of fine details over time.

Re-Engraving Support
